Mayfield files for re-election to Senate District 49

Asheville, NC — North Carolina State Senator Julie Mayfield (D-Buncombe) filed this morning to seek a third term as the Senator for District 49. Mayfield, a Democrat, reflected on everything she has delivered for the people of Buncombe County since she was first elected in 2020, and noted that she is looking forward to continuing that work for another two-year term.

“I am fortunate to have spent the last three years serving my neighbors and my community in Buncombe County,” Mayfield said. “In the General Assembly, I’ve stood firm against Republican attacks on our most fundamental rights, but I’ve also done the hard work of reaching across the aisle on issues where we’ve had common ground, without sacrificing my progressive values.”

Since she was elected in 2020, Senator Mayfield has worked across the aisle to :

  • Help the City of Asheville more easily fund capital projects
  • Expand resources and capacity for the Asheville Police Department and other departments throughout the state
  • Secure long-sought-after changes to Buncombe County’s occupancy tax law so more funding flows to community projects
  • Secure funding to improve water quality in the French Broad River
  • Help craft groundbreaking climate legislation.

Senator Mayfield has also been a vocal opponent of Republican attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, abortions, elections, and voting. Additionally, she called out the trend to authoritarianism in our politics.

“Since 2020, I’ve watched as our politics has become more divisive and polarized,” Mayfield said, “I’ve watched as Republican leadership has amassed power, reduced transparency, and politically gerrymandered our elections to ensure their continued dominance. I have spoken out against these efforts as well as the attacks on women’s rights and our LGBTQ+ friends and family. We need fighters who will stand up against these efforts, and I’m proud to be that fighter for Asheville and Buncombe County.”

During her time in the General Assembly, Senator Mayfield has been a staunch advocate for clean energy, carbon reduction, healthcare access, affordable housing, a living wage, women’s rights, and LGBTQ+ equality. She has been endorsed in previous campaigns by organizations such as the Sierra Club, Conservation PAC, Vote Pro Choice, Equality North Carolina, Planned Parenthood Votes South Atlantic, Lillian’s List, Emily’s List, NC State AFL-CIO, National Nurses United, the North Carolina Association of Educators, and the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, among others.
