Information about water distribution

Because State supplies of bottled water have been so slow to arrive, the City of Asheville has ordered bulk water from a separate source, and it has now arrived.

The City of Asheville has just begun water distribution in front of City Hall. Here’s what you need to know:

– People must bring their own containers and are limited to 1 gallon per person present, including children, with a 5 gallon maximum per household.

– Distribution will be immediately in front of City Hall and we ask people to line up through Pack Square Park. The closest parking areas are the Renaissance surface parking lot, the adjacent county parking deck, and the city parking lot behind/adjacent to City Hall.

– The distribution site will remain open from 1 PM until 7 PM each day so that everyone can get home before the 7:30 curfew. The city has three tankers which are expected to be available here for 2-3 days.

Buncombe County started distributing water at 2 PM today, Monday, Sept. 30. A one-day supply of bottled water will be available for each individual in a household, with distribution sites operating as drive-through locations, but walk-ups will be accommodated.

The locations are:

William W. Estes Elementary School, 275 Overlook Road, Asheville
Sand Hill Elementary, 154 Sand Hill School Road, Asheville (enter via Acton Circle)
North Windy Ridge Intermediate School, 20 Doan Road, Weaverville
Fairview Elementary School, 1355 Charlotte Highway, Fairview

We are aware that many in our community cannot make it to the distribution sites, and local government officials are working on developing a mobile distribution plan to reach those in need. Those plans will be announced as soon as possible. The County anticipates continuing these distribution efforts in the coming days, with expanded hours and available supplies as they become available.

We continue to receive assurances from the state that bottled water will also be arriving today or tomorrow. I understand everyone is eager for water and that frustration is high. I share that frustration but, I ask you to exercise patience and to show grace to the people around you and the city staff and volunteers who will be working at the distribution site.

We are all in this together, and we can get through it together. I will send more updates about where bottled water will be distributed as soon as I have them.
